Beach in El TiranoMargarita Island is part of the State of Nueva Esparta in Venezuela. It is located 35 minutes away by plane from Caracas, the capital of the country. The island can be reached with some charter airlines from Europe, like Condor,or with one of the several airlines that flyes to Caracas. From Caracas there are more then 20 flights a day to Porlamar. The airport in Caracas is far away from the capital.

Margarita Island is one of the favorite destinations for Venezuelans, especially in December, Easter, and Summer Vacation (from July until August). These are the peak seasons for visitors. The High Season for International Tourism goes from October until March every year.


Beach Playa CaribeSince Margarita is a free port, it also gets tourists from nearby island in the Caribbean Sea that come for shopping at very low prices.

In September, the island receives a number of visitors that come for the festivities of the Virgen del Valle, the patron saint of Venezuelan East, The Navy, and fishermen.

The weather on the Island is tropical and sunny most of the year. You will not miss a day of beach. Even in the rainy season a beach day is guaranteed since it rains mainly at night or in the early morning. Eighty two different beaches wait for you, many of them unknown by most visitors. Also, Margarita Island is not in the route of hurricanes.

El Valle ChurchThe roads are quite good, and, with a rental car, you can reach any point of Margarita even the shore of the beach.

The Capital city of the Island is La Asuncion, It is a small town in the middle of the Island with beautiful colonial style architecture. La Asuncion holds most of the regionel government entities. Many people think that Porlamar is the capital of the State, but it is only the major and most populated city. The center of Porlamar is quite busy and crowded as most of the centers in many capital cities in Venezuela.

With the years, Porlamar has been extended towards Pampatar which is one of the most exclusive and expensive areas, and it is the core for shopping centers like Sambil Mall.

The most beautiful beaches are quite far away from the city. The most popular ones are: Playa El Agua, Playa Parguito, Playa El Yaque, Playa Caribe, Playa Manzanillo and Playa Punta Arenas in the Peninsula de Macanao.

For those who are not interested in beaches, there are many other options for trips and excursions; for example, you can visit Laguna de La Restinga, el Museo Marino, La Asuncion, or walk around in San Juan's mountains, Conejeros Market and Pampatar.
